As part of my health routine, I have been going to the gym regularly for over a year and training with a personal trainer three times a week. I’ve also been tracking everything I eat. I think I might have become all too obsessed with it—sometimes I feel like the only clothes I wear these days are my workout clothes and I have dreams about recommended daily allowances of nutrients. (Just kidding on that last part, but I do pay attention to it!)
I’ve also been expanding my fitness routine. I recently gave Pilates a try—what an interesting workout! In addition, I started running with my sister after my gym workouts. We actually started these runs after taking a walk to a Target store, about a mile and half from my house. We then began regularly walking to Target rather than driving, which in turn led to us walking further and further to do other things, even to buy groceries.
Eventually, our walking turned into running, and today our run by the river took us by a little cafe with protein shakes that beckoned us to give them a try. I got a berry protein shake with almond milk, and my sister got a berry protein shake with hemp milk. My latest recipe, Berry Hemp Heart Salad, was inspired by this shake, and although the almond with berries would have been a great berry salad too, I decided to create it with hemp hearts, also called hemp seeds.
Why hemp hearts? Hemp hearts have been in my diet for a couple of years now, though I had never tried hemp milk until I tasted my sister’s protein shake. It was seriously delicious. Plus, hemp hearts are packed with nutrition—I mean a lot of nutrition. Hemp seeds are a natural blend of easily digested proteins, omega 3 and 6, antioxidants, amino acids, fiber, zinc, iron, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin D, vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, copper, potassium and even gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), which is great for skin. On top of that, anyone can enjoy these seeds because there are no known allergies to hemp seeds.
So go ahead and add hemp seeds to your diet! You’ll become a hemp heart convert like me if you make my Berry Hemp Heart Salad.
Berry Hemp Heart Salad Recipe
- 6oz raspberry
- 6oz blueberry
- 6oz strawberry, chopped
- 6oz blackberry
- 1 Tablespoon maple syrup
- 1 Tablespoon hemp hearts
- 1 stem of mint leaves, chopped
- Combine berries together.
- Gently mix berries with honey and hemp hearts.
- Sprinkle with mint.
